In this week’s MarketWire, we continue a series on cosmetics in games with co-host Anton Bernstein from Pocket Worlds.

We interviewed Constantino Carrega, the Co-founder and Chief Product Officer at PlayMakers, a platform that enables game studios to leverage UGC content in their games.

In this newsletter:

Top Revenue: Last War Survival achieves #2 worldwide, and Pokemon TCG Pocket hits #9 worldwide.
Top Downloads: Of course, we should expect any new Pokemon game to hit #1 worldwide, which Pokemon TCG Pocket did with very little UA push… maybe ~15% paid.
Top Steam Revenue: Dragon Age Veilguard debuted at #3 top grossing on Steam charts.

At #2 worldwide, Last War Survival achieves one of its highest ranks yet
At #9 worldwide, Pokemon TCG Pocket hits top 10 with very little marketing and fanfare
Quite noticeably, Dungeon and Fighter Origin has now dropped out of the worldwide top 10, although it’s still at #3 in China.
At #6 China, 明日方舟 is Arknights the tactical role-playing and tower defense game.

At #1 worldwide, Pokemon TCG Pocket achieves #1 status despite very light user acquisition behind the game.
At #1 China, I still don’t get the success of Shawarma Legend there.

Top 10 Steam Charts by Revenue

There's not much to notice here besides Dragon Age at #3 displacing Throne and Liberty.

Speakers:

Constantino Carrega from Playmakers relayed compelling insights about where UGC is headed in gaming. What's particularly interesting is how AI, community dynamics, and evolving business models are shaping the landscape.

The UGC-AI Dynamic: Competition or Synergy?

One of the most intriguing aspects of our discussion centered on how AI fits into the UGC ecosystem. Here's what emerged:

Value Through Narrative: Even as AI becomes capable of generating infinite content variations, UGC maintains unique value through storytelling and community connection. Think of it like the Mona Lisa - AI could create endless variations, but the original's value comes from its creator and story.
Hybrid Approaches:
- AI as an enhancement tool for creators rather than a replacement
- Potential for AI to help conform UGC to game art styles
- AI assistance for the "last 5%" of polish that amateur creators might struggle with
- Quality control and automated moderation
The Human Element: Pure AI-generated content might struggle to maintain the same perceived value as human-created content, particularly in social gaming contexts where creator identity matters.

The Cold Start Problem: Solving the Empty Platform Challenge

This is a critical issue that deserves more attention than it often gets. Here's a detailed breakdown of effective solutions:

Initial Content Strategy:
- Start with commissioned content from professional creators
- Launch with contests offering substantial prizes ($5,000+ prize pools)
- Leverage existing creator communities from platforms like Playmakers
- Create showcase opportunities for early adopters
Incentive Layering:

Immediate Financial Rewards
- Direct payment for approved content
- Revenue sharing models
- Contest prizes
Social Recognition
- Featured creator programs
- Community spotlights
- Official game social media exposure
Platform Benefits
- Early access to new tools
- Special creator badges or status
- Direct communication channels with dev team

Deep Dive: The Economics of UGC

The financial dynamics of UGC are more nuanced than many realize:

Conversion Rate Impact: A Harvard study showed 30% higher conversion rates for community-created content is particularly significant when you consider:
- Lower production costs
- Built-in marketing through creator networks
- Community goodwill generation
- Organic content discovery
Resource Efficiency: The 200x efficiency example (20,000 vs 100 buildings) demonstrates the remarkable scaling potential, but it's important to consider:
- Quality control overhead
- Moderation costs
- Platform integration expenses
- Community management resources

Implementation Insights: Often Overlooked Considerations

Technical Architecture:
- Plan for content expansion from day one
- Build standardized asset pipelines
- Create clear technical specifications for creators
- Design flexible content delivery systems
Community Management Infrastructure:
- Clear guidelines and documentation
- Support systems for creators
- Feedback loops for improvement
- Conflict resolution processes

The Platform Play: Multi-Game Ecosystems

One of the most compelling insights from our discussion was the potential for multi-game UGC ecosystems:

Creator Benefits:
- Single platform for multiple games
- Diverse revenue streams
- Portable reputation systems
- Broader creative opportunities
Developer Benefits:
- Pre-existing creator community
- Established quality standards
- Shared moderation resources
- Lower implementation costs

Future Considerations: Where UGC Is Headed

Emerging Models:
- Hybrid AI-assisted creation tools
- Cross-game asset marketplaces
- Specialized creator economies
- New monetization approaches
Platform Evolution:
- Integration of professional and amateur content
- Standardization of creation tools
- Improved discovery systems
- Enhanced creator analytics

Key Takeaway

The future of UGC in gaming isn't just about user-created content - it's about building sustainable creator ecosystems that benefit players, developers, and creators alike. Success requires careful consideration of technology, community, and economics, with AI serving as an enabler rather than a replacement for human creativity.

The platforms and games that will win in this space will be those that solve the cold start problem effectively, build strong creator communities, and find the right balance between AI assistance and human creativity.
